All laptop USB ports failed at once

posted in: USB ports | 5

Problem description:

All laptop USB ports stopped working at once. Laptop stopped recognizing any USB device plugged into any USB port.

Possible cause:

1. Software problem.
2. USB controller failure.

Possible troubleshooting steps and repair solution:

1. Uninstall all USB related entries in the device manager. Restart the laptop and let it re-detect USB ports and install drivers. Test USB ports. If it doesn’t help, move to the next step.

2. Back up all personal files and reinstall Windows from scratch. It possible that all USB ports stopped working because some system files got corrupted.

3. If reinstalling Windows from scratch doesn’t help, most likely this is hardware related failure. Apparently, the motherboard has a failed USB controller. If that’s the case, the whole motherboard has to be replaced.

Alternatively, you can use an external PCMCIA USB card. You plug this card into the PC slot and get 2 or 4 USB ports instead.

Sometimes, turning the computer off, pressing the power button for 10 seconds, and turning the computer on fixes the problem as the mobo might be heated up, it worked before with me.

It might help if your laptop stopped turning on completely, but it will not help to fix failed USB ports.

    andx.andx,

Have you tested here CD/DVD drive with a bootable disc. If the optical drive doesn’t work in Windows, it doesn’t mean the drive is bad. Try booting the laptop from a bootable CD (Windows installation CD, live Linux CD, etc…) If the laptop boots but cannot read the same CD in Windows, this is software related problem.

i said try portable dvd rather than replace it, then i found all 3 usb ports dead and speaker

Again, this could be software problem. If you can start the laptop from a bootable CD, try booting it from Ubuntu disc.
After it boots Ubuntu, test USB ports and sound again.

I doubt you can find the motherboard schematics for this laptop. Toshiba doesn’t provide such information to general public. Even their service manuals do not have complete motherboard schematics.
