My problem:

My Toshiba M400 (PPM40C-1200TE) recently started to perform poorly, lagging, getting stuck, and occasionally randomly restarting. Other times, the screen would just black out, fan would blast, and the power light would blink orange regularly.
Although I didn't realize it at first, the restarts/blackouts would happen whenever I moved the laptop. Hmm, that's familiar cz whenever I moved the laptop before, the laptop would have for about 1 sec, but continue smoothly where it left off. This is due to Toshiba's HDD Protection (basically, the HD r/w head locks up whenever the laptop moves to prevent HD damage).

I'm guessing that recently, the sensor / accelerometer went bad and became oversensitive. This could explain the general lagginess (HDD keeps locks up), and the more severe restarts/blackouts.

Solution:

Start -> Programs -> Toshiba -> Utilities -> HDD Protection Utility: Disable

If you don't have the utility, you can grab it from the Toshiba drivers website.

- I've read about users having this issue even after reinstalling their OS. That probably wouldn't solve the problem because the HDD Protection mechanism is built into the hardware, and unless you disable it through the Toshiba utility, even reinstalling OS won't help.

hi, i bought a dell laptop a year back and im facing this random screen blackout problem since 6 months...its a recurring problem as it happens for 4-5 days and then automatically pauses for some days i contacted dell they sent me driver but it didnt work and then they told me to reinstall my OS...but THAT DIDNT HELP EITHER :(
lately it just happened that while this problem occured my lappy wont start and when i pressed the power button "startup repair" would start and then it wud say windows is unable to repair so click finish to shut down!
i contacted repair centre and he formatted my lappy for rs.500 and told that the problem was probably due to dust and he has settld it so it wont occur again...BUT it occured gain the same day...this time i noticed that while it occered the laptop was hot after working 1.5hrs and its fan waas not working...in short im pissed and WANT THIS PROBLEM TO GO!!

Donald,

Laptop screen remains blank no boot sound or anything. The Laptop fan starts, the power button light comes on, the cd tray opens. Nothing else works. What could be the possible problems, where can I look?

This could be memory related failure. Try removing memory modules one at a time. Test your laptop with each memory module individually. One of the modules could be bad.

gerard,

PLZZ HELP ME MY LOP TOP IS DNT WORKING when i open it the lop top dont seem to open its still blank and the cooling fan is not moving at all plzz help me plzz wat should i do?

It's hard to tell what is going on without testing the laptop.
Does the laptop have any LED lights when the AC adapter plugged?
First of all try reseating memory modules. If you have two memory modules, try removing them one by one. It could be memory failure.

ce,

I have a Toshiba M400 laptop with Ubuntu 10.4 installed. I had a problem about “blinking” and “fan runs at full speed”, but last week this situation had been occurring sometimes. However, now I couldn’t manage to boot.

No boot and fan runs full speed? Sounds like motherboard failure. I've seen it happening before with Toshiba laptops.
Just in case, try removing RAM modules one by one. Test the laptop with each module separately. If it doesn't help, probably it's bad motherboard.
