Laptop screen shows 4 desktops instead of one desktop

Problem description:

The laptop screen suddenly started showing 4 smaller desktops instead of one. Each small desktop looks like a reduced copy of the normal desktop. It looks like someone reduce the desktop size 4 times and tiled it. When you move the mouse, the arrow moves on all four desktops at the same time.
Image on the external monitor looks normal.

Possible cause:

LCD screen failure.

Possible troubleshooting steps and repair solution:

Most likely this is related to the LCD screen failure. Apparenlty there is a problem with the LCD screen controller board and the screen has to be replaced.
