Laptop shuts down when playing games

Problem description:

The laptop shuts down on its own when playing games. All other time it works fine.

Possible cause:

Laptop overheats.

Possible troubleshooting steps and repair solution:

Most likely the laptop shuts down while running games because it overheats. When you run a game, you push the CPU to the limit and it generates a lot of heat. If the laptop cooling module (fan and heat sink) is clogged with dust, the laptop will overheat and shut down.

Make sure the cooling module is clean. Remove dust using canned air or air compressor.
Apply fresh thermal paste on the processor if needed.

    Check out http://www.irisvista.com/tech/
There is no Satellite M205 listed but it could be similar to Satellite A205. All general laptop disassembly steps should be similar.

I have the same problem. The problem is definitely overheating!! I bought a laptop cooler, and whenever i’m gaming, i put my laptop on it such that the vent sits directly on top of one of the fans on the cooler. PROBLEM SOLVED!!! Try it! If it still gives u issues, then it must be something else other than overheating.

i have acer aspire 4520 and having same problem when playing Counter strike, so i have just simple solution to overcome this problem , try putting something underneath the laptop(for example , tv remote , used aaa battery or any square shape item) near the cpu’s fan , though it seems to bit odd while playing games but in my case this is the only one solution without opening your laptop.

Eventually you’ll have to clean the heatsink.
But it’s not necessary to disassemble the laptop. Just blow air into the air intake on the bottom of the laptop. This will remove most dust from the cooling module.

    Hello everybody,

I’ve baought a Samsung R710 Notebook and guess what… I do have the same exact Problem als you fellas above.

I play World of Warcraft – everything is set to “low” Setting – my resolution is 1440 x 900. Whenever I start playing – my system shuts down. I guess its a heat problem. What can I do? – Is there a possibility to drill some holes into my lil buddy?

Has anybody tried something like this?

Greets from Germany (excuse my english)

Did you buy it brand new? If not, it’s possible the heatsink is clogged with dust and has to be cleaned.
Also, listen for the cooling fan sounds. Can you hear the cooling fan spinning? There is a chance of bad fan.
