Laptop switches on only when power plugged

Problem description:

The laptop switches on only when power plugged. When the laptop is unplugged and you press on the power button, nothing happens.

Possible cause:

1. Bad battery.
2. Motherboard failure.

Possible troubleshooting steps and repair solution:

This is either the battery or motherboard related problem.

1. Try reconnecting the battery. Remove it from the laptop and plug back in. Test the laptop again. It’s possible that the battery is not making good contact with the connector on the motherboard.

2. Try replacing the battery with a new one. The battery could be bad. Even if the battery is detected by the operating system and appears to be 100% charged, it still could be bad.

3. It the problem still exists even after replacing the battery, most likley it is related to the motherboard failure. You’ll have to replace the motherboard or use the laptop just on AC power.

Maybe the AC adapter is dead.
It’s possible, the battery light turns on for a moment because the battery has no charge and the AC adapter is dead.
Can you test your laptop with another known good AC adapter?
