Stripe running from top to bottom on laptop screen

Problem description:

There is a stripe running from top to bottom on the laptop screen. The stripe could be a few pixels or few inches wide. The image on the left and right side from the stripe is normal. The stripe could be filled with solid color or has many thin vertical lines inside. The strip appears on the screen as soon as you turn on the laptop, even before the operating system starts loading.

Possible cause:

1. LCD screen failure (most likely).
2. Video board failure (less likely).

Possible troubleshooting steps and repair solution:

Just in case test your laptop with an external monitor attached to the VGA port. Take a look at the external video output. If stripes appear on both internal and external screens, you have a problem with the video board.

If stripes appear only on the laptop monitor and external video works normal, your problem is related to the LCD screen. You’ll have to replace the LCD screen.
